World's first all-glass undersea restaurant opens

The solitary fish tank is a common sight in thousands of restaurants throughout the world as restaurateurs seek to give their clientele a bit of visual stimulation as they await their fare.

But a restaurant in the Maldives, which opened last week, takes this concept to a whole new level.

Ithaa, meaning pearl, is the world's first all-glass undersea restaurant, offering diners 180 degree views of the surrounding marine life and stunning coral.

Curious sharks, rays and reef fish observe diners as they tuck into their deep-fried Red Snapper on yellow curried dhal or 'Faru Man' reef fish, which are among the contemporary Maldivian dishes on offer.

Set six metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean, Ithaa is part of the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa.

Diners begin their meals with drinks on a specially constructed deck over the ocean, before entering the five by nine metre transparent arch, which houses the restaurant, via a special staircase.

A meal at the restaurant, which seats 14 diners at a time, costs $170 per person for half and full board guests, and $200 per person for bed and breakfast guests.
